1760–1875 Siam Porcelain Gambling Token – Pike Motif

This exquisite porcelain gambling token from Siam (modern-day Thailand) dates back to the period between 1760 and 1875, a time when local economies often relied on alternative currencies due to a lack of official small denominations. Known as a “pee”, this token served both as a counter for the Chinese gambling game Fantan and as a widely accepted local currency within certain districts managed by Chinese-operated gambling houses known as hongs.

The front of the token features a beautifully molded and painted pike (fish) motif, a symbolic and decorative element framed by bold blue Chinese characters and encircled in a traditional cobalt border. The reverse side displays a single large character in hand-painted cobalt blue, typical of individual shop markings or denominational symbols used at the time.

Made from glazed porcelain, these tokens came in varied shapes, colors, and designs, with thousands believed to have been produced. This particular round-shaped example stands out due to its well-preserved details and the unique inclusion of the pike, which may have signified luck, prosperity, or a specific hong’s identity.

Despite being outlawed once the King of Siam introduced standardized coinage, pee tokens continued to circulate unofficially well into the 20th century, highlighting their importance and utility in everyday transactions. The use of such tokens is a fascinating example of local economic innovation in the face of monetary shortages, especially in rural and merchant-driven areas.

Whether you’re a collector of early Southeast Asian currencies, Chinese-Siamese cross-cultural artifacts, or simply appreciate the historic artistry of porcelain, this piece offers remarkable value. It is both a striking display item and a rare numismatic relic from a transitional period in Thai monetary history.
