1842 Russia Assignation 25 Rouble Banknote, POOR
On the obverse, the crowned double-headed eagle, a symbol of imperial authority, prominently features a shield at the top center. The first signature is printed, while the second—representing the manager of the State Assignation Bank—is handwritten, adding a unique personal touch. The reverse of the note presents the denomination in an octagonal design, emphasizing its monetary value.
The Assignation ruble, which this banknote represents, was the first paper currency in the Russian Empire, used from 1769 until 1849. It circulated alongside the silver ruble, initially at parity but eventually declining in value to around 3.50 Assignation rubles per silver ruble during the 1840s. This banknote is not just a currency but a testament to the evolution of monetary systems in Russia, reflecting economic challenges and transformations of the era.
