In this article we going to clarify how to determine the year of paper money of tsarist Russia which were put into circulation in 1898-1912. First, pay attention to the bottom of the bill – there you will see the signatures of two people the Manager and the Cashier. Moreover, the signature is usually located on the front side of the bill, however, not many people know that thanks to it, you can easily determine in what specific period this banknote was put into circulation, because the year on the bill indicates when these types of paper money were released. Actually, all denomination’s paper money were printed and after the revolution by the Provisional Government in 1917 and the Soviet Government in 1917-1920s. After that it can be determined by the serial number.

How to determine the year of the paper money issued during the reign of Nicholas II?

The signature of the Manager on paper money is also the most important factor in determining the value of the bill. However, from 1898 to 1917, there were only four managers of the State Bank in the Russian Empire:

Eduard Dmitrievich Pleske (1898-1903)

He was the manager of the State Bank from 1894 to 1903 but he held this position until 1904. Then he was dismissed from the position as Minister of Finance and appointed as a member of the State Council.

Paper money in denominations of 1, 3, 5, 10, 100, 500 rubles with the date “1898” and 25 and 50 rubles with the date “1899” and the signature of the Manager of the State Bank E. Pleske were put into circulation in 1898-1903.

Sergey Ivanovich Timashev (1903-1909)

In 1903 he was appointed the Manager of the State Bank and stayed in the position until 1909. Thanks to his efforts during the years of the Russian-Japanese War, the exchange of credit notes for gold was preserved, therefore, in 1909 he was appointed as Minister of Trade and Industry and became a member of the Finance Committee.

Paper money of 3, 5, 10, 100, 500 rubles “1898”, 25, 50 rubles “1899”, 3 rubles “1905”, 5 and 10 rubles “1909” with the signature of the Manager of the State Bank S. Timashev came into circulation in 1903-1909.

Aleksey Vladimirovich Konshin (1910-1912)

In 1910 he was appointed as the Manager of the State Bank but in 1914, he left the position due to health reasons.

Ivan Pavlovich Shipov (1914-1917)
