Rare 1645 TR Spanish Colonial Silver 8 Reales Cob Potosi Philip IV

This 1645 Spanish Colonial Silver 8 Reales Cob, struck at the Potosí Mint in Bolivia under King Philip IV, is a rare and historically important survivor of the mid-17th century. Known as the famous “piece of eight”, the 8 Reales was the backbone of Spanish colonial coinage and became the first truly global currency.

The date attribution to 1645 is confirmed by visible numerals — the “6” and the lower portion of the “5” remain in their correct positions. Equally important is the assayer’s mark “T over R”, identifying Pedro Treviño, who served at the Potosí mint from 1643 to 1647. Above the assayer’s mark appears the bold mintmark “P”, further verifying its origin.

This issue is considered especially rare, as many coins from this period were recalled, devalued to 7½ Reales, or melted following the infamous Potosí Scandal of 1649. That scandal exposed debased coinage production at Potosí, resulting in widespread recalls and the destruction of many coins. Surviving examples like this cob, retaining both date and assayer marks, are highly sought after by collectors.

The obverse features the Jerusalem cross with lions and castles in the quadrants, while the reverse carries the crowned Habsburg shield, incorporating castles, lions, the pomegranate of Granada, and the Pillars of Hercules. Struck by hand on an irregular silver planchet, no two cobs are alike, giving each piece its own unique character and historical fingerprint.

This coin is more than just silver — it is a tangible artifact of colonial power, maritime trade, and global history. Collectors of Spanish colonial coinage, shipwreck treasure, or early world currency will recognize this as a rare opportunity to own a piece tied to one of the most dramatic episodes in minting history.
