Description

Baptismal Silver Medal Germany Nuremberg ca. 1690

This rare Baptismal Medal Germany Nuremberg ca. 1690 is a remarkable silver piece of devotional art weighing 49.79 g with a 55 mm diameter. Crafted by two celebrated Nuremberg medallists, Lazarus Gottlieb Lauffer (obverse) and Georg Hautsch (reverse), it reflects the spiritual, artistic, and historical richness of late 17th-century Germany.

The obverse depicts the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan River, with John the Baptist pouring water over Jesus as the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a radiant dove. The reverse illustrates an infant’s baptism at an altar, surrounded by allegories of the Christian virtues Faith, Love, and Hope. Both sides are encircled with inscriptions underscoring the sanctity of the sacrament.

Traditionally, baptismal medals were presented by godparents to children as sacred keepsakes and symbols of blessing, often treasured for both their spiritual meaning and precious metal content. This particular medal is distinguished not only by its excellent preservation but also by its outstanding craftsmanship and rarity. It embodies devotional art, Nuremberg’s celebrated engraving tradition, and deep religious symbolism.

Ideal for collectors of historical medals, Christian art, and 17th-century European artifacts, this piece stands as a testament to faith and artistry, making it a valuable centerpiece for any serious collection.
