Description

1999 Lithuania 5 Litai Coin, VF

This 1999 Lithuania 5 Litai coin is a striking example of late 20th-century Lithuanian currency, minted in Vilnius by the Lithuanian Mint. Issued just before the transition to the euro, this coin reflects the strength of national identity and the artistic skill of local engravers.

The coin is bimetallic, featuring an aluminum-bronze center encased in a copper-nickel ring. It weighs approximately 10 grams and is graded VF (Very Fine), maintaining sharp detail across both the obverse and reverse.

Obverse

The obverse features the national coat of arms of Lithuania (Vytis – the charging knight), surrounded by the country name “LIETUVA” and the issue year “1999.” This side was crafted by designers Antanas Žukauskas and Arvydas Každailis, reflecting Lithuania’s rich heraldic tradition.

Reverse

The reverse displays the large denomination “5 LITAI”, encircled by an elegant ornamentation of three evenly spaced groups of curved bars, forming a distinct, modern aesthetic. It was designed by Antanas Žukauskas, who incorporated classical elements into a contemporary style.

Edge

The smooth edge carries an incused inscription:
“PENKI LITAI PENKI LITAI”, separated by a six-sided star—adding a subtle but stylish anti-counterfeiting element.

This coin holds historical value as part of the last generation of Lithuanian currency before euro adoption, making it a great addition to any Baltic, bimetallic, or post-Soviet coin collection.
