Rare 1760–1875 Siam Porcelain Gambling Token “Pee” – Round

This rare and authentic porcelain gambling token—known as a “Pee”—dates back to 1760–1875 in old Siam (present-day Thailand). Originally used as counting pieces for the traditional Chinese game Fantan, these tokens were issued by Chinese-owned gambling houses known as hongs. Over time, due to a persistent shortage of small change in the region, these beautifully crafted tokens took on the role of unofficial local currency within the districts controlled by hong owners. This practical adaptation made them widely accepted in everyday trade despite their non-legal tender status.

Handmade from porcelain and glazed with a creamy white finish, this token features blue Chinese characters on one side and a plain reverse. The circular form and minimalistic design reflect its utilitarian origins while highlighting the simplicity and elegance of 18th–19th century ceramic craftsmanship. Each piece was unique to its issuing hong, resulting in thousands of distinct designs—some with symbolic animals, others with calligraphy or numbers.

Even after the King of Siam officially outlawed their use in favor of minted coinage, these tokens continued to circulate underground well into the early 20th century, reflecting their deep-rooted value and trust within the communities that used them.

Today, these antique porcelain pees are highly collectible artifacts of Southeast Asian economic, cultural, and gambling history. They offer a rare glimpse into the interplay of Chinese influence and Thai society, making them not only beautiful curios but also important historical objects for collectors, historians, and numismatists alike.
