Description

1834 Russian 5 Kopecks (ЕМ-ФХ) – Copper Coin, AU55

Classic 19th-Century Russian Copper Coin

This 1834 Russian 5 Kopecks is a well-preserved copper coin from the Ekaterinburg Mint, bearing the mint marks ЕМ-ФХ and certified PCGS AU55. Issued during the reign of Emperor Nicholas I, this coin represents mature Imperial Russian copper coinage of the early 19th century. Moreover, its strong preservation and professional certification make it an attractive example for collectors seeking quality and authenticity.

Design and Striking Characteristics

The 1834 Russian 5 Kopecks features the iconic Imperial Russian design used for large-denomination copper coinage. The obverse displays the crowned imperial eagle, a powerful symbol of the Russian Empire, while the reverse clearly presents the denomination, date, and mint marks ЕМ-ФХ, identifying production at the Ekaterinburg Mint. As a result, the coin offers both historical significance and strong visual appeal.

Condition, Detail, and PCGS Certification

Certified About Uncirculated (AU55) by PCGS, this 1834 Russian 5 Kopecks retains much of its original detail with only light circulation wear. Additionally, high points remain sharp, lettering is crisp, and major design elements are clearly defined. The surfaces display an even, natural copper tone that enhances eye appeal. PCGS certification guarantees authenticity, accurate grading, and long-term protection, which is especially important for collectible Imperial Russian copper coins.

Historical and Numismatic Context

During the reign of Nicholas I, the Ekaterinburg Mint played a key role in supplying copper coinage for the Russian Empire. However, many large copper coins saw heavy circulation, making higher-grade survivors increasingly difficult to obtain. For this reason, an 1834 Russian 5 Kopecks in PCGS AU55 condition stands out as a desirable and increasingly scarce example.

Collector Appeal and Long-Term Value

This 1834 Russian 5 Kopecks appeals to collectors of Imperial Russian coinage, PCGS-certified copper coins, and 19th-century European numismatics. Furthermore, its strong grade, clear mint attribution, and classic design make it suitable for advanced collections as well as long-term holdings. Ultimately, this coin offers an excellent opportunity to acquire a historically important Russian copper coin with solid condition and lasting collector value.

Nicholas I

Nicholas I (1826-1855)

Nicholas I (1826-1855) – Nikoláy I Pávlovich, 6 July 1796 – 2 March 1855) reigned as Emperor of Russia, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Finland from 1825 until his death in 1855. He was the third son of Paul I and younger brother of his predecessor, Alexander I. Nicholas inherited his brother's throne despite the failed Decembrist revolt against him. He is mainly remembered in history as a reactionary whose controversial reign was marked by geographical expansion, economic growth, and massive industrialisation on the one hand, and centralisation of administrative policies and repression of dissent on the other. Nicholas had a happy marriage that produced a large family; all of their seven children survived childhood.
